Santander squash BAWAG PSK acquisition rumours

Rumours that Spanish bank Santander was looking to take over Austria's BAWAG PSK bank were
squashed today after the head of the Spanish bank's operations in Austria dismissed the idea.

Speaking at a press conference in Vienna Olaf Peter Poenisch, who runs Santander in Austria, said that they do not have the appetite for acquiring BAWAG PSK which he said was "too big for us".

Although the Spanish bank are not looking for a full takeover of a bank in Austria Poenisch said that the financial lender is interested in expanding it's position in the country and may in the future be interested in buying "filet pieces" of banks.

At the end of last year, Santander was the largest bank in the eurozone. Operating in 40 countries worldwide, the bank has more than 13,900 stores and over 103 million customers.

Santander employs around 400 people in Austria, where it has 27 branches. Provisionally the bank has said it made a 42.4 million Euro profit in Austria in 2013.
