Worlds first Viktor Frankl museum to open in Vienna

The worlds first museum dedicated to renowned Austrian psychotherapist Viktor Frankl is to open in Vienna in the autumn.

The opening of the museum coincides with the tenth anniversary of the founding of the Viktor Frankl Centre in Vienna and which will be located next door on Mariannengasse in the city's ninth district. The centre is the spot where Frankl lived for 52 years and already attracts 10,000 visitors a year, putting on exhibitions, lectures, film nights and workshops.

Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist who developed an alternative theory of psychotherapy to rival that of Freud's and Adler's - the theory that the most powerful human desire is to find meaning in life, known as logotherapy.

He was born in 1905 and worked as a psychiatrist in Vienna before being kidnapped whilst Austria was under Nazi rule and taken to the Theresienstadt concentration camp and then on to Auschwitz. During this time, Frankl was separated from his wife, parents and brother and only heard after the war that they had all perished in the concentration camps.

Despite this tragedy Frankl continued to pursue his theory about the human desire for meaning in life and went on to publish several books on the subject, including his seminal 'Man's Search for Meaning' in 1959.

He took up a professorship at the University of Vienna and delivered talks at universities around the world until his death in 1997.
