Austrian skier Johannes Duerr has been formally disqualified from the men’s cross country 15km competition the 15km Skiathlon event that he competed in for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi in February.
Duerr had tested positive in a drug test carried out during the games, and admitted he had taken performance enhancing drugs over the course of 18 months.
The International Olympic Committee announced yesterday that they are ordering Austrian Olympic Committee to return to the diploma awarded by Duerr for placing 8th in the men's 15km and 15km Skiathlon.
The cross country skier was due to compete on the final day at Sochi in the men's 50km before he tested positive for Erythropoietin (EPO) on 16 February, the fifth athlete to have been caught taking enhancement drugs during the Games.
EPO, a blood booster enhancement drug that is more commonly associated with professional cyclists, has not been found to be used by any other athletes at Sochi.
Colleagues were dismayed following the revelations, with one coach calling Duerr 'a scoundrel' and another athlete saying 'it is the worst thing I couldn't even dream about'.
Duerr apologised for his behaviour in February, and said: "So many people worked their butts off for me and I disappointed them with my stupidity."
