House Where Hitler Born Painted Blue By Vandals

Austrian police are investigating after the house where Adolf Hitler was born was vandalised with graffiti.

The house in the town of Braunau am Inn, in Upper Austria, has been extremely controversial especially after it was revealed that there was opposition in the town towards the idea of knocking it down, but a lack of ideas about what the alternative might be.

At the moment the only indication of the house's history comes from a plaque, indicating that it was the place where Adolf Hitler was born, but this has now been covered in blue paint as have part of the walls.

The house is in private hands, but the owner gets substantial rent from local officials to make sure that it does not get used for anything inappropriate. The house is currently empty since a charity that had been based there moved out more than two years ago.

It comes a week before Hitler's birthday on 20th of April. He was born in the Austrian town, just on the border with the southern German state of Bavaria, in 1889. At the time of Hitler's birth, the building was a local pub where Hitler's parents rented rooms so that his dad could carry out his job as a customs official at the nearby Austrian German border.

The Hitlers left the building when Adolf was three years old and his father was transferred to Passau, a town in Germany. It is because of the short time that Hitler spent in the house that the mayor of the town Johannes Waidbacher has said he does not want the building turned into a memorial. He said last year that he felt that the local community had already done enough to remember the past, adding: "There are already quite enough memorials in the region."

Prior to the blue paint attack police said that they also had reports of stickers being posted on the walls of the town.

The stickers included both those against the far-right scene and those apparently supporting the far right scene and included included phrases like "Nationale Sozialisten Deutschland", which was the name of Hitler's political party, and "NS-Zone".
