Pony And Trapped After Too Much Fresh Grass

A roly-poly pony lost its balance on an Alpine slope due to its calorie-overloaded body.

The pony plunged downhill and only came to a stop when its head got stuck in a pile of logs in a farmhouse yard in Mieming, in the western Austrian state of Tyrol.

Stefan Maier, 39, who bought the animal as a pet for his daughter, said he realised it was in difficulty after he heard it whinnying in distress. He walked outside his farmhouse home to discover the trapped animal.

He said: "I tried to pull it out myself but it was well and truly stuck, and I was worried it might hurt itself."

In the end he called for help from the nearby Mieming fire station. They too tried human muscle power to pull the pony free - without success.

In the end they had to bring in a crane to extract it from its log prison.

Maier said: "The poor animal was pretty worked up with the noise around it and we had to get a vet to give it an injection to calm it down before we pulled it free.

"Although rather groggy, once free he soon perked up and was back on his feet in an hour, unharmed and acting as if nothing had happened.

"And I have told my daughter he's got to go on a diet to prevent him from toppling over in future."
