Wiener Linien grinds to a temporary halt Wednesday morning

Vienna's public transport will grind to a halt between 4 am and 6.30am on Wednesday morning as unions hold an emergency meetings to discuss the safety of Wiener Linien staff.

The services will reduce from the normal 900 buses, subways and trams to just 167 buses being run by private companies.

Wiener Linien is paying for this emergency temporary transport solution for the two-and-a-half hours which will operate routes on the 20 night time bus lines, with buses arriving at roughly seven minute intervals.

The meetings are being held with the company's Works Council after staff have demanded that working conditions for transport staff, particularly for tram and bus drivers, are made safer. The move follows a spate of recent attacks on staff, including one on a 23-year-old tram driver in January where he suffered life-threatening injuries after he was attacked by a man with a knife.

The driver was stabbed several times in the back and arm with a 12 inch knife when he was walking from his tram to take a break at around 11.30 on a Sunday morning.
