Cheetah Triplets Act Tough At Worlds Oldest Zoo

These cute little cheetah triplets are doing their best to look tough after they became the latest additions to the animal family at Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna.

With a fearsome reputation they were keen to warn zoo keepers who took these snaps that they were not to be treated lightly, despite weighing in at only 500 grams each.

The three youngsters were born in April after mother Cimber's 95-day pregnancy - the first cheetah babies in thirteen years to be born at the zoo.

The sex of the babies is not yet known.

Zoo Director Dagmar Schratter said: "This is the third time we have managed to breed cheetahs at the zoo - following successful attempts in 1999 and 2001. They are an endangered species so it is very important to be able to successfully breed them in captivity.

"The birth went as planned, and there were no complications. The babies are developing as normal."

The cheetahs are not yet available for the public to see. They are still in their birthing box, and usually stay there for around the first four weeks.

They will be fed by the mother for around the first three months of their lives before they start on a meat diet.

Father Akin is a two-year-old cheetah who moved to the zoo in Vienna last year from Pretoria, in South Africa.
