Fraudster sent to face juridicary mafia in Czech Republic

A Czech businessman who has been sentenced to six years in jail for fraud will be extradited by Austria to the Czech Republic this week, am Austrian court has ruled.

The High Court in Graz heard how Marek Ricar tried to get 15.5 million Czech crown (56,4000 EUR) from the Local Development Ministry in his home country under the pretence of a work contract.

The money was given to him by the authorities as payment for work to do with the construction of multimedia communication centres in the Czech Republic but instead he pocketed the cash, although he has always denied his involvement.

Having been sentenced in the Czech Republic, under the alias Josef Marek, Ricar fled two years ago to Austria and ended up in Linz being supported by a nunnery where his wife and daughter were working.

An European arrest warrant was issued by a Czech court but Ricar took his case to Austrian courts, arguing that his sentencing was politically motivated and that he did not receive a fair trial. He also argued that there was a 'judiciary mafia' in his home country and he fears for his life there.

But this week the court in Graz decided his argument did not stand up and ordered his extradition. The lawyer for Ricar, whose legal work is being paid for by the nunnery where Ricar stayed, has said earlier this week that they plan on appealing to Austria's Supreme Court to halt the extradition.
