First Austrian wine awarded 100 Parker points

A 1995 Nikolaihof Riesling wine bar has been given the highest score possible by a prestigious international wine reviewer - the first time an Austrian wine has been rated this high.

Robert Parker's "The Wine Advocate", a US magazine that reviews and awards scores to wines across the world, awarded the 1995 Riesling the full 100 points possible, placing it alongside some of the best wines in the world.

The wine awarded the high accolade had been kept in storage for 17 years in a large wooden barrel and had been bottled in April 2012.

The wine producer Nikolaihof is thought to be the oldest and most traditional
winery in Austria, whose history can be traced back 2000 years to the Roman era. It is run today by husband and wife team Nicholas and Christine Saahs, who run the winery in line with the Demeter Association, which means the do not use herbicides, pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or synthetic sprays and instead use natural products.
