New top candidate for FPOe

Following the resignation of Andreas Moelzer as the top candidate for the Freedom Party in the EU elections, conservative but pro-EU membership Harald Vilimsky has taken the top spot.

Moezler was forced to step down earlier this year after a run of controversial remarks about race in the Europe and his comment that the EU regulations made Hitler look liberal.

Vilimsky has not been without his share of controversy in the past - including coining the
term 'negative immigration' and describing some black African, Turkish and Arab people as 'kulturfern' (separated from culture).

But the 47-year-old who is a close advisor of FPOe leader Heinz Christian Strache has said that he is intent on the FPOe winning over 20 percent of the vote in the upcoming European elections.

Vlimsky supports Austria staying in the EU and the euro, but is against Turkey joining and also advocates against the European free trade agreement that is under discussion, arguing that it would threaten the quality of Austrian produce.

Some of his more traditionally conservative views include being against same-sex couples having adoption rights.

He became secretary of the Viennese faction of the FPOe in 2004 and quickly became a manager for the electoral campaign. By 2006 he was the Freedom Party’s secretary general in the National Assembly.
