Wolf Cubs In Vienna

Adding to their cheetahs cubs and hatching baby birds, Shoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna has also welcomed in a pack of six wolf cubs as the latest Spring baby animals.

The wolf cubs belong to the Arctic wolf family but unlike their mum and dad they don't yet have the gleaming white coat that in the wild would camouflage them against the snow.

Wolf cubs, like these born at the zoo in late April, are born with darker brown fur and in the wild are very vulnerable in the first few weeks of their life when they are completely blind for.

The new arrivals in Vienna are sticking close by to their protective mum Inja, who will wean them for three months, but there could be a chance for visitors to see the young wolves if they are lucky.

"Wolf pups are born and raised in a burrow. With a bit of luck you can catch a glimpse of the little ones, if Inja carries them from the building," said zoo director Dagmar Schratter.

The first time they had young wolves born at Schoenbrunn was back in 2012 - now with the latest additions the pack has grown to include twelve wolves.
