Austria helps supply drinking water to Bosnia

Experts from the Austrian army are helping flood hit areas in Bosnia Herzegovina by providing safe drinking water, the Ministry of Defence has announced today.

Up to 80 soldiers are available as part of the contingent, which could be able to produce as much as 240,000 litres of drinking water per day for transporting to areas that do not have access to safe water.

It is thought this support, which should arrive by the middle of next week, could help around 50,000 people in the flood hit areas of Bosnia.

A team of mine searching experts will also accompany the transport into Bosnia due to the high threat posed by landmines from the war in the 1990s that have been washed up in the flood.

Forty Austrian soldiers are already in the country as part of the EU mission to fight the damage caused by the floods. The Austrian army has also provided four helicopters and ambulances, which have already brought more than 800 people to safety.
