Screaming hedgehog wakes up neighbourhood

A frantic hedgehog woke up an entire neighbourhood when it got stuck in a wall outside a house in Austria.

Neighbours whose gardens were bordered by the wall on the outskirts of the capital Vienna, were the first to be woken, with one describing the noise like 'a high pitched scream' that 'was truly terrible'.

After searching with flashflights and walking towards the source of the screaming, the neighbours discovered a little hedgehog had got stuck in a hole in the wall.

Police had already been called and were there a few minutes after the neighbours.

A police spokesman said: "It was an awful racket. It may have been trying to escape from a cat or a fox or might have been looking for slugs but either way it was well and truly wedged in the wall."

After unsuccessfully trying to gently lever the animal out the police called firemen who started to chip away at the facade. But every time they removed some of the facade the hedgehog simply crawled further into the hole.

Eventually after 30 minutes they managed to free the trapped animal and set on its way.
