Austrian police have arrested a 21-year-old student from South Korea on suspicion that she murdered her baby after giving birth in a train toilet and then threw the body in a bin before carrying on with a tour of European cities.
A murder hunt was launched after a post-mortem was carried out at the Institute of Forensic Medicine at Munich's Ludwig Maximilian University, in southern Germany, which indicated that the baby boy was killed as soon as he was born on the Railjet 68 train. He had been born healthy but died shortly after, apparently from suffocation. The alarm had been raised by cleaners who noticed blood stains in the train toilet after the train had pulled into Munich, in Bavaria, Germany.
In fact the train had already turned round and was heading back to Vienna when the cleaners who were working on board as the train travelled discovered the blood and raised the alarm. When police started investigating they found the newborn's body in the bin. They also found bloodstains in the train restaurant indicating that the young woman had gone there to eat something and the waiter confirmed that the person in that seat had been a petite woman with short dark hair.
The train had originally set off from Budapest in Hungary and passed through Vienna, Salzburg and Rosenheim before ending up Munich, and as a result the search for the mother involved the police forces from three countries, Hungary, Austria and Germany.
Police said that the 21-year-old was traced by police who tracked down the fact that she had been on board by following her credit card information. She was apparently studying in Paris and together with another woman had gone travelling across Europe using her credit card to pay for the trip. She is currently in custody and if convicted of infanticide faces up to 5 years in jail.
Police swooped to arrest her after she had journeyed back to Vienna and was apparently set to continue what appears to have been a European travelling expedition by catching the train to Prague in the Czech Republic.
Austrian police spokesman Roman Hahslinger said: "She is very slim and as a result had managed to keep the pregnancy secret. She said she had wanted to give the child away once it was born but that it was already dead. Her friend had left the train for an unknown reason when it arrived in Vienna, and the pregnant woman had continued on to Germany giving birth in the toilet on the way. Afterwards she cleared up the blood and threw the baby in the bin. Later she returned to Vienna again by train where she met up with her friend and together they were supposed to be carrying on to Prague and she was arrested as she waited at the train station."
The police added that they had no idea yet who the father of the baby was.
