Sawmill workers severed hand reattached

A sawmill worker whose hand was severed off after an accident with a saw has had it successfully stitched back on after an emergency 17 hour surgery.

The 29-year-old from Carinthia severed all of his fingers and part of his palm off two weeks ago when he fell and got his left hand caught in a saw blade. Luckily, quick thinking colleagues speedily strapped up his injury and got him to an emergency Hospital in nearby Klagenfurt.

The injured man was at the operating table just 45 minutes after the accident happened and was operated on by surgeons for 17 hours. The circular saw blade was about five millimetres thick and had caused severe damage but two surgical teams, including three  surgeons, were able to successfully reattach the hand.

Describing the moment when he awoke from anaesthesia and looked at his hand, he said he "was crying with joy".

Today the lucky worker has begun occupational and physiotherapy to get his hand back to normal again. But only when the wound is completely healed, will it be possible to know how much function he has left in the hand.
