The youngest offspring at Vienna Zoo has joined the world in style - kitted out with its very own Conchita Wurst style beard.
After a gestation period of five months, the new Emperor Tamarin came into the world in early May. Its German name is Kaiserschnurrbarttamarinen which directly translates as 'Emperor Moustached Tamarin'. "As the name implies, the males and females have an unmistakable trademark: a long, white moustache. It is good to see our youngest beard is already coming," said zoo director Dagmar Schratter .
It is the second offspring to come from these Emperor Tamarin parents. Last year a male was born, who is now lovingly helping his parents care for his younger sibling.
"Most young animals are carried by the father or the older brother on piggyback. Only when it is hungry and starts screaming do they bring it to the mother so it can suckle. Since the mite is always clinging on to the fur the sex has not been discovered yet," said Schratter.
The monkey offspring weighs just 40 grams and without the tail is only about five inches tall. Claws on the fingers and toes of the Emperor Tamarins, which belong to the family of marmosets, allow the animals to climb along vertical stems and even upside down to look for food.
These primates are native to the tropical rain forest of South America but due to the destruction of their natural habitat, they are threatened and are bred in zoos as part of a European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which Schönbrunn Zoo participates in.
