Russian President to visit Austria

Russian president Vladmir Putin is to visit Austria for one day only on June 24.

He will meet Austrian president, Heinz Fischer, in the Hofburg, Vienna, where discussions on the recent events between Ukraine and Russia will be held.

Fischer visited Putin in the Kremlin, Moscow, three years previously, however, the annexation of the Crimea and the civil war crisis in Ukraine gives more weight to Putin’s visit to Austria.

Unlike France and Germany, countries that will also be involved in Putin’s visit, Austria’s neutrality will offer a different view on the talks.

The Austrian presidency has expressed that Putin’s visit will not be a distraction from addressing the current problems facing Ukraine and the Crimea, rather it will encourage open dialogue with the aim of finding a solution to these issues.

Fischer has expressed that Russia must be open to engaging in open political dialogue and also wishes to make it very clear to Putin that the Austrian view on the annexation of the Crimea is an undeniable breech of international law.

Kurt Seinitz, Austrian journalist for the best selling Austrian daily newspaper  the Krone, commentated that Putin’s visit is not purely chit chat but that it will have a strong, positive effect on encouraging open dialogue on the current crises occurring in the Black Sea region.

Seinitz said that during these talks Austria should be aware of it’s traditional role in international diplomacy, the role of the bridge builder.
