Young Hip Hop Dancer Gets 18 Years For Drug Smuggling

A blonde hip hop dancer and charity worker promised an international career after she was spotted by a talent scout has been jailed for 18 years in Indonesia after her work offer turned out to have been part of an elaborate drugs con.

Austrian Susanne Mayr, 29, was delighted when she was offered the chance for an all expenses paid trip to perform in South Africa. But she says her life is now over after getting the 18 year jail sentence at a court in Jakarta.

Her mother Ingeborg who travelled to Jakarta from the family home in the town of Baden, in Lower Austria, said her daughter who was devastated by the news.

She said: "I had a call from her last night, I had already been informed by the embassy about the sentence. She told me it was like a bad dream, and was really distressed."

The young woman's mother said her daughter had ended up in difficulties because of her charity work in Africa where she had been fundraising for a project which had included dedicating money from her performances as a professional dancer.

She said: "She had even visited the region, and had always dreamt of being able to get work down there so was really happy when she was spotted by the talent scout on YouTube who contacted her over the internet and offered her a job.

"She performed under the name Young Bebe and had quite a following, and in November she set off for her new life. But when she was in South Africa she performed a few times but then her manager told her that he had some work for her in Indonesia but that she would have to get nicer luggage and he took it to a shop where they purchased a new suitcase.

"But it was part of a con and the case actually had a fake lining with the drugs hidden inside. She called me from jail to tell me about what had happened, she told me mummy, you've got to help me. They're going to shoot me."

Austrian officials paid for the woman's legal fees in order to make sure that she least avoided the death sentence, which she was at risk of receiving because she was found with over 3 kg of crystal meth. Authorities have not been able to track down the manager who Susanne says gave her the suitcase, who reportedly vanished after the dancer was found with the drugs in Indonesia.
