Preview: The Vienna International Children's Film Festival

The Vienna International Children’s Film Festival begins this Saturday with kids promised an exciting mix of live-action and animated films.

The festival, which runs from 14 to 22 November, will show both live-action and animated children’s films in several cinemas around the city. It operates much like a regular film festival, asking film makers to submit entries and then awarding prizes – and thanks to this democratic process, the festival offers a great opportunity to see contemporary, non-mainstream children’s cinema that may otherwise escape the limelight.

There will also be screenings of two older films definitely worth seeing on the big screen: Ein Schneemann für Afrika, made in the German Democratic Republic in 1977, and the classic animated film of Gulliver’s Travels from 1939.

The films tackle a variety of themes and come from countries around the world. Some are dubbed, while others use subtitles, meaning that there may be some language barriers for non-German speakers. This will not necessarily hinder children’s enjoyment however, and the festival offers a great opportunity to encourage their interest in cinema.
