Tom Cruise makes shock shopping street appearance

By Thomas Hochwarter

Tom Cruise shocked fans when he turned up on Salzburg’s most popular shopping street.

The Hollywood superstar is in the city shooting the action comedy "Knight and Day", and fans of the actor had little hope of seeing their idol in person after media reports of strict security around Cruise and co-star Cameron Diaz.

But crowds at Getreidegasse doing their Christmas shopping could hardly believe their eyes when the 47-year-old star suddenly turned up in front of a shoe shop near the house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born at around 3.30pm yesterday (Thurs).

Cruise reportedly posed for pictures and signed autographs in the street’s pedestrian zone.

"No one expected him to turn up here – in the middle of the city centre’s afternoon shopping chaos," one shopper said.

"He was really friendly and patient. Many people took pictures. He must have been surrounded by at least 50 people," the woman added.

It has not been reported whether the "Mission: Impossible" star – who was accompanied by several bodyguards – eventually went on to buy something.

Meanwhile Salzburg Airport staff said they were surprised by how friendly the actor was when he arrived earlier yesterday.

Co-star Cameron Diaz – who arrived two days earlier – already started filming in the city centre yesterday. Producers 20th Century Fox said recently the one week of shooting in Salzburg would include the filming of wild street-chase scenes.

Two weeks ago around 2,000 people attended castings for 430 extras positions.
