‘Cache’ starring Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil topped the Top 100 Films of the Noughties list released today.

Haneke shocker voted best film of decade

By Thomas Hochwarter

A film by controversial Austrian director Michael Haneke has been voted best film of the decade by The Times.

The disturbing 2005 "Caché" starring Juliette Binoche and Daniel Auteuil – which was released as "Hidden" on English-speaking markets – topped the London newspaper’s Top 100 Films of the Noughties list released today (Mon).

The movie tells the story of a successful and happy French family whose life goes out of control when they receive videotapes showing their home.

"Caché" triumphed over "The Bourne Supremacy" / "The Bourne Ultimatum" from 2004 and 2007 which was named in second place by the newspaper’s arts and culture editorial team.

"No Country for Old Men" by the Coen brothers (2007) was third.

Haneke – who had success with films such as "Funny Games" and "The Piano Teacher" – earlier this year won the Palme D’Or (Golden Palm) at Cannes for "Das weiße Band" (The White Ribbon).

The film – which tells the story of a German town shortly before the First World War – has been nominated by Germany in the Best Foreign Film category for next year’s Oscars. The black-and-white production was largely subsidised by the country’s film industry.

Haneke, 67, is regarded as one of Europe’s most influential directors today.
