Austria will be left only dreaming of a white Christmas, say forecasters

By David Rogers

Most Austrians will be left only dreaming of a white Christmas this year, according to Vienna’s Central Agency for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG).

It forecast today (Mon) that temperatures would be in double-digits on the plus side of the thermometer on Christmas Day.

"Christmas is three days too late this year," a ZAMG spokesman said.

He added rain would fall in many areas tomorrow, with the ground so cold the precipitation would cause black ice to form in the west, the north and some parts of the east, with highs between five and six degrees above zero.

More rain is likely on Wednesday and the night of the 23rd/24th will be cold, but a warm wind the next day will produce very mild weather.

The warm weather prediction comes after three men froze to death overnight over the weekend amid snow and some of the coldest weather in decades. The freezing temperatures also caused widespread transport chaos and numerous accidents this weekend.
