Music mix on 11 stages in Vienna this New Year's Eve

By Thomas Hochwarter

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to celebrate New Year’s Eve in the city centre of Vienna where eleven music stages are set to guarantee a good time.

All kinds of music will be performed at the venues throughout the Innere Stadt district free of charge from 2pm.

A new addition on 31 December will be free dance courses offered by Viennese dance schools at the Freyung Square.

A puppet theatre featuring beloved characters Kasperl and Strolchi, meanwhile, will surely entertain children in front of City Hall.

Karaoke stages at the Neuer Markt Square and in Löwelstraße will give everyone the opportunity to sing chart hits and oldies.

Thousands are expected at Am Hof Square where market-leading music station Ö3 will entertain the masses with a DJ set and live performances.

Electronic sounds will dominate on Kärntner Straße.

Around 70 food stands will offer hot and cold snacks as well as champagne and other drinks.

The "Silvesterpfad" events are taking place for the 20th time this year. While many regard the Austrian capital the place to be on New Year’s Eve, others avoid it because of incidents such as fistfights among drunk revellers and firecrackers thrown into the crowds.
