Salzburg scientists seek cause of skin ageing

Scientists at Paracelsus Privatuniversität Salzburg have began research into the causes of skin ageing, project leader and dermatologist Johann Bauer said today (Fri).

He noted that a lot of work had been done on dealing with the consequences of ageing skin but little research had been done on its cause.

Bauer added that his team would do research on "gene expression" and protein activity in upper and lower layers of the skin.

"We want to study genes in old and young skin and find examples of changes in it," he said, adding that such examples could be key to the cause of the ageing of skin.

A person’s genetic profile, as well as environmental factors and life-style, basically determined how fast his or her skin aged, he noted.

Bauer claimed cosmetics to prevent wrinkles from occurring were unsatisfactory since they addressed the consequences rather than the cause of skin ageing and often had unpleasant side effects.

Even if his team discovered the cause of skin ageing, he warned, it would not lead to "an eternal fountain of youth."

Drug store chain dm, which has been cooperating with the university for years, will support the project. Bauer declined to reveal what the project’s budget would be.
