Berger slams 'Avatar' Oscar decision

Austrian cameraman Christian Berger has criticised the decision to award 3D sci-fi adventure movie "Avatar" for Best Cinematography at this year’s Academy Awards.

Tyrolean Berger, who was also nominated for his work on "Das weiße Band" (The White Ribbon), told Austrian broadcaster ORF before attending the German Oscar Dinner Party: "It’s questionable since the movie does not contain any camera work in the traditional sense, but rather 3D and special effects."

"Avatar" cameraman Mauro Fiore won the category at the 82nd Academy Awards which took place on Sunday. It was one of three Oscars bagged by the film which was nominated in nine categories.

"Das weiße Band", a German-French-Austrian co-production directed by Austrian Michael Haneke, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

Vienna-born actor Christoph Waltz was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s World War II satire "Inglorious Basterds".

Waltz is the first Austrian actor to win an Academy Award since Maximilian Schell won Best Actor for his role in "Judgement at Nuremberg" in 1961.

"Die Fälscher" (The Counterfeiters), a concentration camp drama directed by Austrian Stefan Ruzowitzky, won Best Foreign Language Film in 2008.

Götz Spielmann’s thriller "Revanche" was nominated in the same category last year.
