Environmentally friendly cars will be able to park for free in Innsbruck, according to city environment councillor Walter Peer.
He said yesterday (Mon) that the measure would enter into force in March or April and would continue until 30 June 2012.
"This unique measure should stimulate sales of cars with environmentally friendly powertrains and make a concrete contribution to environmental protection," he added.
Tyrol environment councillor Hannes Gschwentner said the measure would constitute "a real contribution to the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases in greater Innsbruck."
The measure will apply to hybrid and electric cars and those that run on natural gas.
The measure comes shortly after the Austrian Traffic Club’s (VCÖ) criticism last December of the boom in registrations of gas-guzzling sport utility vehicles (SUVs) in 2009.
VCÖ said the number of registrations of SUVs had increased year on year by 22.5 per cent in 2009, whereas there had been an increase of only 8.0 per cent for all cars.
VCÖ pointed out though that a change in the system of penalties for greenhouse-gas emissions by certain cars as of 1 January would see a premium of 25 Euros a gram charged on all car emission levels above 160 grams. The current level is 180 grams.
VCÖ expert Martin Blum said: "Additional improvement of the framework for the purchase of low-emission cars is necessary."
