A quarter of Austrians are at risk of compulsive shopping, a study has found.
The study conducted annually by the Austrian Chamber of Workers (AK) found that 27 per cent of Austrians regularly go on shopping sprees. The figure has slightly declined in comparison to last year.
The study classifies 19 per cent of Austrians as "clearly" and eight per cent as "strongly" at risk, meaning they are already addicted to shopping.
According to university professor and AK-consumer advocate Karl Kollmann those most at risk of shopping addiction are those looking to replace dissatisfaction with family, school, workplace or relationship.
He classifies this as "Compensatory" shopping.
In such situations, shoppers also buys unneeded things as a remedy for frustration.
Kollmann adds the problem really begins when shopping gets compulsive, that means regular, and exceeds spending power. This compulsory behavior often leads to loss of financial control and even bankruptcy.
The 2010 study for which 1,000 consumers aged 14 and over were asked according to the internationally recognised "Hohenheim shopping-addiction indicators" shows that 14 to 24-year-old women are at the highest risk of shopping addiction with almost 53 per cent going on "binges".
