What´s on at the Burg Kino this week (24 January - 30 January)

By Maddy French

This week at the Burg Kino on the Opernring the following films are showing:

The Wolf of Wall Street: The latest from director Martin Scorsese. Based on the true story of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio), from his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. Excess success and affluence in his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont warranted Belfort the title – "The Wolf of Wall Street.

12 years a Slave: is based on the true story of one man's fight for survival and freedom. In the pre-Civil War United States, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Facing cruelty (personified by a malevolent slave owner, portrayed by Michael Fassbender), as well as unexpected kindnesses, Solomon struggles not only to stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist (Brad Pitt) will forever alter his life.

The Butler: As Cecil Gaines serves eight presidents during his tenure as a butler at the White House, the civil rights movement, Vietname, and other major events affect this man's life, family and American society.

La Vie D'Adele: At 15, Adele doesn't question it: girls go out with boys. Her life is changed forever when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair, who will allow her to discover desire, to assert herself as a woman and as an adults. In front of others, Adele grows, seeks herself, loses herself, finds herself. French film with German subtitles.

La Venus a la Fourrure: An actress attempts to convince a director that she is perfects for a role in his upcoming production. A Roman Polanski film from last year starring Emmanuelle Seigner and Mathieu Amalric.

The Hobbit the Desolation of Smaug: The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Inside Llewin Davis: follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling to make it as a musician against seemingly insurmountable obstacles-some of them of his own making.

Captain Phillips: The true story of Captain Richard Phillips that in 2009 leaves his family in Vermont to lead the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama on the other side of the world. On the high seas, but his ship is attacked by a band of Somali pirates, armed and ready for anything, and Phillips is kidnapped, in search of redemption.

Blue Jasmine: Jasmine lives in New York and is married to a wealthy businessman Hal. Everything is going great until you discover that Hal is actually a crook. This discovery leads to the financial ruin of the family and the psychological breakdown of Jasmine, who decided to move from her sister in San Francisco.

Gravity: The brilliant Dr. Ryan Stone is on her first space mission, while the astronaut Matt Kovalsky is the last flight before retirement. What for them was to be a routine space walk turns into a catastrophe. The shuttle is destroyed and they are finding themselves in the silence of the universe. Floating in darkness and without any interaction with the Earth have apparently no chance of surviving because oxygen is running out. Perhaps the only way to hope to get home is to delve into the infinite space.

The Third Man: In 1946 in a war-torn Vienna, divided into four zones of occupation, the American writer of westerns Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) attends the funeral of his friend Harry Lime (Orson Welles), but is he really dead?
