Faberge egg exhibition opens in Vienna

Russian Tsars Fabergé eggs come to Vienna

A show of over 160 items from Moscow museums is set to open in the Art History museum in  Vienna, with the star exhibit being four imperial Easter Eggs.

The famous golden eggs were created by Peter Carl Faberge for the last Russian tsars at the turn of the 20th century and have been a top attraction for art history museum visitors in the Russian capital.

'The World of Fabergé' exhibition in Vienna will also feature other jewels, paintings and valuables that once belonged to the Imperial Romanov family in pre-revolutionary Russia.

During the time of the monarchy, the lavishly decorated golden and bejewelled eggs were usually presented as gifts between members of the royal family, with the first one supposedly made by Faberge for Empress Maria Fedorovna, the wife of Tsar Alexander III, in 1885.

After the success of that egg, Faberge received a royal appointment from the Tsar as a goldsmith and continued to make eggs for the next twenty years, with his company growing to employ 500 craftsmen.

The last eggs ever to be made were the Constellation eggs, which were intended for the Tsars wife Alexandra Feodorovna. However, although work had begun on the egg in 1917 it was never finished or presented to the royals due to the Russian Revolution of the same year that overthrew the monarchy.

The exhibition will take place at Kunsthistorisches Museum on Maria-Theresien Platz in the first district of Vienna between 18 February and 18 May 2014.
