Police search for thieves responsible for violin theft

Sixteen expensive violins stolen

By Maddy French

Sixteen violins were among items stolen from the Vienna Capella Academica orchestra last weekend, a theft thought to be worth a total of 150,000 Euros.

The thieves got into a practise room of the Capella Academica in the city and made off with the instruments  from the makers Ceruti, Thir and Da Saloestimated.

The burglary is believed to have happened on Sunday, although the theft was only discovered on Monday when a violinist wanted to get her instrument from the clubrooms in Leopoldstadt.

As well as the violins, other stolen items included family silver and the frame of a baroque mirror, according to head of the ensemble Eduard Melkus.

He said: "When I discovered the break in, I saw that the whole room had been turned upside down, all the cupboards and drawers were open and the instruments were gone."

Police believe the burglars, who have not been caught, must have broken in through a skylight on the premises and then fled back over the roof.
