Mozart's birthplace in Salzburg

Salzburgs Mozart festival director extends contract

The artistic director of the Salzburg festival that celebrates the life and works of Mozart is set to continue running the show through to 2017.

By 2017 French conductor Marc Minkowski will have been responsible for a full five years as the director of the festival, designing the programme in partnership with artistic director of the Mozarteum Foundation Matthias Schulz.

The announcement was made by organisers of the Mozart Week, the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation, on Monday.

"We look forward in this period to the distinct artistic profile that Marc Minkowski gives to the Mozart Week which we have already been able to experience and enjoy," said Johannes Honsig-Erlenburg, president of the Salzburg Mozarteum Foundation.

The 2014 festival is running now in Salzburg, featuring performances of Mozart's masterpieces from Vienna Philharmonic, Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra amongst others.

Next year's festival programme has already begun to be worked out, with a staging of Mozart’s 1785 cantata, "Davide Penitente" planned as the centrepiece.
