A brothel owner in Carinthia has put in a bid to gain ownership of the floating stage on the picturesque Lake Wörthersee in Klagenfur.
The offer was revealed on Thursday and, along with bids from restaurant entrepreneurs from the area, Hans Zeppitz and Martin Ramusch will be considered on Monday by a lake stage committee .
Jochen Kohlweiss, who already owns six brothels in Carinthia and Salzburg, wants the 2000 capacity floating stage to create the "finest brothel in the Alps-Adriatic region" that would feature an event stage with culinary, cultural and musical events as well as an exclusive bar, terrace with lake access and spa.
Kohlweiss does not expect to win the contract although he has confirmed his offer was serious and said he could fulfil the bank guarantee of half a million Euros that is required as a condition of the tender.
Built in 1999 at the request of the then Governor Jörg Haider, the floating stage is made nearly completely of wood and was the third major open-air stage in Austria.
Since it was built a number of artistic directors have run programmes at the venue, although often meeting with controversy over high costs and unpopular productions. In May last year, Councillor Wolfgang Waldner announced that the stage would close because costs of 600,000 a year had become unaffordable.
