A Dangerous Method one of many films shot on location in Vienna

Vienna becoming a hot spot for filmmakers

Vienna is becoming a hot spot for filmmakers with the number of requests to film in the city increasing significantly last year.

The Vienna Film Commission has reported that in 2013 a total of 343 film project requests were received, an increase of 5.5% on the previous year.

"I have a feeling that we are now reaping the fruits of our development work," Managing Director of the Vienna Film Commission said last week at a press conference.

The Commission was set up five years ago to provide support for film production teams looking to come to Vienna but who complained that it was confusing and complicated to work with the Austrian authorities. Stoisits now acts as a negotiator between the city's authorities and the production companies.

Production teams include those from Hollywood and around Europe as well as trainees at the beginning of their career and who, according to Stoisits, "need our special attention".

As well as Orson Welles' The Third Man famously being set in the shadowy streets of Vienna, the city has also featured as the backdrop to modern films such as Before Sunrise, A Dangerous Method and The Three Musketeers.
