The film centers on a man who develops a relationship with an intelligent computer operating system (OS) with a female voice and personality. It marks Jonze's solo screenwriting debut. The film was under fire, when Scarlett Johansson won numerous awards in Best Supporting Actress categories, because we don't see the actress actually playing in the film.

As he tends to her wounds, she recounts the erotic story of her adolescence and young-adulthood.
