The 2014 Eurovision Song Contest has been won by Austrian singer Conchita Wurst.
Her entry ‘Rise Like a Phoenix’ is an anthem for people who are different to rise above their critics, and she stormed to victory, picking up a multitude of ‘douze points’ from across the continent.
Austria won the Eurovision Song Contest with 290 points, a winning margin of 52 over second placed Netherlands with 238 and Sweden were third.
It is a resounding victory for the Drag Queen, now crowned Queen Conchita of Eurovision if not of Europe.
Despite calls from Russia and Ukraine for her entry to be blocked, even Russia gave her five points and Ukraine sent eight points to Conchita.
Conchita Wurst delivered Austria’s second Eurovision Song Contest victory, the first since 1966. She was overcome with emotion before composing herself to give a victory speech of hope and love.
Conchita is the alter-ego of 25 year old Tom Neuwirth. She rose to fame in Austria since appearing in talent show Die Große Chance where she placed second. She was selected internally by Austrian broadcaster the ORF to represent Austria after coming second in the Austrian Eurovision selection show in 2012.
Speaking about what the win means for Conchita she said: "For me a dream came true but for our society it shows there are people out there that want to go on and not step back into the past. I’m so thankful. I think we said something tonight. It’s not just a victory for Austria, it’s a victory for love and tolerance.
"I cried because I am so happy and beyond thankful. I said to myself just this one time let me be the one with the gold. I don’t know who I have to thank but… I’m speechless."
And she also had a message for President Putin, saying: "I don’t know if he’s watching but if so I think I said it clear on stage. We are unstoppable."
Queen Conchita has already jumped into the iTunes chart rising fast, and like her, the song is rising faster than a phoenix.
