Habsburg painter Velazquez on show in Vienna

The Art History Museum in Vienna is becoming the first in the German speaking world to host a major exhibition about Spanish painter Diego Velazquez.

The exhibit at Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien opens in Autumn of this yaer and will be taking a look at the artist's rich and exceptional artistic creativity, presenting his mythological and religious works, still lifes, landscapes and studies of animals alongside some of his more famous portraits.

Velázquez lived between 1599 and 1660 and had close ties to the Imperial family, the Habsburgs, who ruled in Vienna and Madrid at that time. As a result the painter, who was the court painter, produced a range of portraits of King Philip IV of Spain that will be on show in this exhibit.

He went on to achieve worldwide popularity and recognition after producing a number of potraits of Maria Teresa and the young Prince Felipe Prospero, as well as painting as part of his Infanta Margarita Teresa series.

Loans from the National Gallery, London and the Museo del Prado Madrid, among other institutions, give a broader insight into Diego Velázquez’s life and art.

The exhibit runs from Oct 28 2014 to Feb 15 2015 at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Maria-Theresien-Platz, 1010 Vienna. For more information visit www.khm.at
