Gold column spits cash at busy shoppers

A bizarre new art installation located on one of Vienna's most upmarket streets spits out euro coins - to raise awareness about the financial crisis.

The golden column on Vienna's Graben, in the Austrian capital, an exclusive shopping mile packed with designer shops, spits out the coins every hour.

The golden column artwork titled  'Quantitative Easing (for the street)' was designed by Artist Axel Stockburger.

Stockburger, who holds a PhD from the University of the Arts, in London, said: "It is a column from which randomly euro coins are spat out and which roll onto the floor. People can then take these coins.

"The aim of the project is to raise awareness of the Euro crisis."

But he added: "Many people are too busy and simply walk past.

"How can it be that there is so much money in circulation but so few people have money, and so many have problems surviving on the money they do have."

The artist did not say how much money was released everyday, adding: "We are not talking about mass amounts of money. This is a symbolic act.

"It will remain in the city until the middle of October.

"It is left to chance how much money the column spits out at each time.

"The aim is that it demonstrates the instability, volatility and and inequality of economic values."
