Austrian actor Karlheinz Böhm dies, aged 86

Austrian actor Karlheinz Böhm has died aged 86 in his home in Grödig, a year after it was announced he was suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.

Böhm was most well known for starring in the 1950s film series 'Sissi' where he played Emperor Franz Joseph, the husband of the Empress 'Sissi' Elisabeth. He went on to star as the main protagonist in the 1960 British film 'Peeping Tom' before appearing in numerous TV and films until as recently as 2009.

In the later years of his life, the actor founded a international development charity called 'People to People' that predominantly raised money for people in Ethiopia.

Born in Darmstadt in Germany on 16 March 1928, Böhm was the son of German singer Thea Linhard and Austrian conductor Karl Böhm, meaning he had duel citizenship.

He grew up in Hamburg and Dresden and was originally on his way to follow his father's footsteps into the world of music until deciding instead to take up acting classes. He moved with his parents to Graz and later to Vienna where his acting career began.

Other films he was well known for included his role as Jakob Grimm in the 1962 The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, as well as Ludwig van Beethoven in the Walt Disney film The Magnificent Rebel. More recently, in 2009 he played the voice of the German villain Charles Muntz in the children's film Up.

Böhm is survived by his wife Almaz, with whom he had set up the charity, as well as their two children, and his five children from his previous marriage to actress Katharina Böhm.
