If you are single these days there are some necessary items you will need to have with you whilst watching “The Fault In Our Stars”. First of all, make sure that you have enough tissues to wipe your tears of joy and sorrow because with multiple plot tweaks you will get to feel plenty of both. Second, get a lot of popcorn or a tub of ice cream to drown your emotions and last but not least, be surrounded by friends!
An imperfectly perfect or perfectly imperfect true love story, "The Fault In Our Stars” is based on the novel of the same name by John Green. It will take you on a journey of Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters, who get a chance to discover that love is possible even when it’s impossible, while they are coping with their fight against cancer.
The film puts Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort together on the big screen for the second time this year, after the science fiction action film “Divergent”. Although, I haven’t read John Green’s book myself, people who have seem to be satisfied with the film and say that in this case you can judge a book by its movie and the other way round, as they both great to read and watch. In both, the time boundaries of love are redefined. Love is not about time in 'The Fault In Our Stars'. It’s about now and "infinity", which although it may seem to last for just a few months can nevertheless unite two hearts forever.
Shailene Woodley, who plays Hazel Grace Lancaster, brings the strong and intelligent, yet stubborn and sarcastic character of John Green’s novel to life with huge success. After her big break starring next to George Clooney in “The Descendants”, Shailene took the lead role in huge productions like “Divergent” and featured as Spider-Man’s big love Mary Jane Watson in the deleted scenes of the latest Spider-Man movie, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”. And in her latest big screen appearance, the talented 22-year-old will rip your heart out in the 125 minutes of the romantic comedy-drama.
Ansel Elgort, who stars as Augustus Waters, rose to the fame playing in the last year’s “Carrie” and “Divergent”, as mentioned above. Ansel portrays every young girl’s dream prince on a white horse, while remaining a “bad boy” full of crazy ideas. Fighting against oblivion, Augustus Waters tries to ride only upwards on the roller coaster called life. Ansel, although just 20-years-old delivers a decent performance and will mess with your mood throughout the whole film.
Nat Wolff plays Isaac - the best friend of Ansel Elgort’s character - and brings on board some of the best moments of the film, like bombing a car with eggs whilst being blind. Laura Dern and Sam Trammell join the cast as the parents of Shailene Woodley’s Hazel Grace, while Willem Dafoe shows up as always with his charming self to “lighten up” the mood.
The soundtrack of the movie includes songs from popular artists like Ed Sheeran, Grouplove, Birdy, Tom Odell, Charli XCX, Lykke Li and OneRepublic, who together force the audience to surrender to their emotions. The soundtrack also underscores the film's concept that it doesn't matter which words you use to say "I love you" , as long as you deliver the message to your significant other.
To sum up, the experience of watching this extraordinary romantic journey with the cast delivering their best performances, will leave you crying your heart out with your friends and wishing to bump in your one and only as soon as possible. “The Fault In Our Stars” will make hearts bleed with emotion the audience didn't know they had in them.
P.S. As a shout out to smokers, the movie provides an ideal example of how smoking can both be cool and healthy - and a good way to chit chat with someone you like.
