Hitler Salute football fan banned from stadiums

By Thomas Hochwarter

An Austrian football fan has been given a three-year ban after raising his hand to make a Hitler Salute when his favourite team played an Israeli club.

Rapid Vienna officials said today (Thurs) they decided to ban the supporter from all of their matches for three years after TV footage revealed he had made the Nazi gesture when the vice champions played Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Europa League last week.

Meanwhile club bosses said the upcoming Europa League match against the Israeli club next Thursday has already sold out as all of the 50,000 tickets for the clash - taking place at the Ernst Happel Stadium – have been snapped up.

Rapid’s Europa League campaign started well as they managed to beat Hamburger SV before reaching a draw away to Celtic Glasgow. The team were then however taught a lesson by Hapoel Tel Aviv who sent them packing 5-1.

Rapid are in third in the Austrian Bundesliga after beating Austria Kärnten 3-1 last night.
