Walchhofer finishes Bormio downhill in third

Michael Walchhofer remains in second in the Downhill World Cup standings after his third place in yesterday’s (Tues) Bormio event.
Slovene Andrej Jerman, who had already dominated the training runs, won the race ahead of Swiss Didier Defago.
Mario Scheiber from East Tyrol had the second-best time but was disqualified after it was found his ski boot was too high.
Styrian Klaus Kröll came eighth ahead of Hans Grugger from Salzburg.
Swiss veteran Didier Cuche leads the Downhill World Cup standings ahead of Walchhofer and Swiss rookie Carlo Janka. Mario Scheiber is in eighth.
Janko is ahead of Tyrolean Benjamin Raich in the overall World Cup standings in which Walchhofer is fifth behind Cuche and Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal who won the overall World Cup last season.
The men’s Skiing World Cup continues on 6 January with a slalom race in Zagreb, Croatia. Events in the Swiss resorts of Adelboden and Wengen are to follow.
