Schild happy about 'most beautiful' career win

By Thomas Hochwarter

Skiing superstar Marlies Schild has hailed her first place in yesterday’s (Tues) Lienz slalom as the "most beautiful victory in my whole career".

The 28-year-old’s win – 1.83 seconds ahead of second-placed French Sandrine Aubert – was the highlight of an astonishing comeback by Schild after the Saalfelden-based slalom specialist missed the whole of last season after crashing during a training run in October 2008.

The triumph in the slalom at the East Tyrol resort was Schild’s 21st World Cup victory.

Lower Austrian Kathrin Zettel finished third.

Schild, Benjamin Raich’s girlfriend, is now regarded as favourite for the upcoming slalom event at the Olympics and the Slalom World Cup. She is second in the Slalom World Cup standings led by German Maria Riesch. Zettel is fifth.

American Lindsey Vonn is meanwhile ahead in the overall World Cup, with Riesch in second and Zettel in third. Styrian Elisabeth Görgl is in seventh, with Schild in tenth.

The women’s World Cup continues with a slalom race in Zagreb on 3 January before two downhill races and one Super-G in Haus im Ennstal, Styria.
