Head tops Olympic medals table

Austrian company Head is celebrating after competitors using its skis won the most medals at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games, company boss Bob Koch said today (Fri).

He said skiers using Head skis had won four gold, one silver and six bronze medals, a total of 11, compared to seven for rival Atomic and four for the Italian Nordica Group.

"It was a great success, one that we had not counted on," he said.

Head, which has production facilities in Kennelbach, Vorarlberg and Ceske Budejovice in the Czech Republic, had a good year in 2009.

Koch said Head had a net profit of 22 million Euros last year after losing 9.7 million Euros in 2008, although turnover had fallen by 2.1 per cent year on year to 319 million Euros.

Head CFO Günter Hagspiel said cash-flow had improved to 29 million Euros in 2009 after having been minus 5.0 million Euros in 2008 and net debt had declined to 71 million Euros last year from 136 million the previous year.

Koch added that orders for the 2010/2011 winter season were 6.3 per cent up on a year ago despite difficult business conditions.

He said that Head was presenting new technological innovations - already being used by professional skiers - at the Sports Fair (ÖSFA) in Salzburg this week and would do so at the Munich fair (ispo) later this month.

Koch said the new technology enabled skiers to make "easier, rounder, better and more aesthetic turns."
