Schaaf lauds 'special' Arnautovic

Werder Bremen boss Thomas Schaaf has praised Austrian striker Marko Arnautovic for "having something special".

Schaaf is infamously tight-lipped when it comes to lauding individual players in public, but the former player now told German newspaper Bild: "Marko has something special. (…) We managed several times to sign promising players with special skills. I think Marko is like that."

Arnautovic joined the German giants from Dutch champions Twente Enschede for around seven million Euros. He failed to make it at Italian champs Inter last season where Twente transferred him as part of a one-year loan deal.

The Vienna-born striker with Serbian roots has been labelled as a difficult character by the sports press and some teammates. But Arnautovic, 21, recently pledged: "I have had enough of partying. That’s why I’m not interested whether Bremen has a vibrant nightlife scene or not."

The national team star hit the news last week by crashing into a golf cart while cycling with teammates. "My teammates asked me why I can’t cycle. (…) Accidents simply happen," he said.

Arnautovic is expected to make a comeback in the national team next month when the squad of Dietmar Constantini faces Switzerland in a friendly in Klagenfurt on 11 August.
