Martin Harnik has had a perfect start to the season for his new club VfB Stuttgart as he found the net only minutes after coming on yesterday (Thurs).
The Austrian national team striker was sent on by coach Christian Gross in the 78th minute against Norwegian vice champions Molde FK in the third UEFA Europa League qualification round. The 23-year-old scored just four minutes later on to make it 3-2 for the German Bundesliga giants.
Harnik played for second-league side Fortuna Düsseldorf last season after failing to make it at Werder Bremen. Stuttgart transferred just 300,000 Euros to Werder to secure his services.
Now the quick striker – who was part of Austria’s Euro2008 squad – has revealed ambitions for a spot in the starting eleven. "My main goal is to play from the start of every match," he stressed.
Meanwhile, the three Austrian clubs in the competition also have good chances of making it into the next round after yesterday’s first leg matches.
Austria Vienna beat Polish club Ruch Chorzów 3-1, while archrivals Rapid Vienna reached a 1-1 draw against PFC Beroe Stara Zagora from Bulgaria. Sturm Graz beat Georgian club FC Dinamo Tbilisi 2-0.
The second round of the 2010/2011 Bundesliga season will take place tomorrow and on Sunday.
