Jürgen Melzer is the only Austrian still in contention for the US Open title.
The Lower Austrian beat Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis in a five-set thriller 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 last night (Thurs).
The Austrian number one in men’s world tennis is now up against Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the Grand Slam event’s third round. The former number one in the world reached the 2003 US Open's final.
Lower Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer already dropped out in the first round against Swede Robin Söderling (5-7, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, 4-6).
Vorarlberg-based female tennis aces Yvonne Meusburger and Tamira Paszek both lost their second round matches.
Meusburger was beaten 6-4, 5-7, 0-6 by Russian Maria Kirilenko, while Paszek stood no chance against Taiwanese Chan Yung-jan (3-6, 3-6).
Upper Austrian Sybille Bammer was crushed by Russian Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Thomas Muster’s comeback seems to be doomed since the former number one in the world lost the third match in a row after returning to professional tennis earlier this year.
The 42-year-old Styrian – who won the 1995 French Open – was defeated by Italian Gianluca Naso in straight sets (4-6, 3-6) at the 10,000 US dollar challenger of Como, Italy, earlier this week.
