German football legend Paul Breitner has launched a stinging attack on Red Bull Salzburg.

Bulls leave Breitner gutted

German football legend Paul Breitner has launched a stinging attack on Red Bull Salzburg.

The former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid midfielder said today (Weds): "I just don’t understand why Salzburg failed in the final playoff stage for the Champions League. I saw some knockout matches, but hardly any of the teams were better than Salzburg."

Speaking to the Tiroler Tageszeitung, the 59-year-old added: "A top player will never join Salzburg because they don’t want to play in the Austrian league no matter how much money they are offered."

Asked how he rated the Austrian national team’s chances of qualifying for the Euro2012, he said: "Austria is currently right in the middle of an improvement process which lasts around six to eight years. That’s why the Euro will probably come a bit too early. (…) But I think Austria will play in the 2012 World Cup in Brazil!"

Defending Austrian Bundesliga champions Red Bull failed a fourth time to reach the UEFA Champions League’s group stage since the club was founded in 2005. The team of Huub Stevens were knocked out by Israeli champions Hapoel Tel Aviv F.C.

Rapid Vienna, who came third in the 2009/2010 season, meanwhile entered the UEFA Europa League by defeating English Premiership club Aston Villa. The team coached by ex-national team striker Peter Pacult also reached the event’s group stage in the previous season.

Vice champs Austria Vienna were kicked out by Greek side Thessaloniki F.C., while ÖFB Cup winners Sturm Graz stood no chance against Italian giants Juventus.

The Austrian Bundesliga continues this weekend with four matches (Red Bull vs. LASK Linz, Sturm vs. SV Mattersburg, Wacker Innsbruck vs. SV Ried, Magna Wiener Neustadt vs. Kapfenberg) on Saturday and the Viennese derby between Rapid and Austria Vienna the next day.

The Austrian Bundesliga table after six rounds:

SV Ried, 15 points
Wacker Innsbruck, 13
Sturm Graz, 10
Rapid Vienna, 9
Kapfenberg, 8
Austria Vienna, 8
Magna Wiener Neustadt, 7
Red Bull Salzburg, 4
LASK Linz, 3
SV Mattersburg, 3
