Snow depot saves "Swatch Snow Mobile"
The annual "Swatch Snow Mobile" skidoo race has once again been saved by a snow depot in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Austria. The mountain which is built of 15,000 cubic metres of tightly packed snow and currently sits in a car park in Hinterglemm, was revealed yesterday (Mon) in anticipation of the race which begins on 8 December.
The depot was first built in Saalbach-Hinterglemm in 2009 after poor snow conditions prevented the race from taking place over the winter. From the end of March that year, 10,000 cubic metres of snow from the Schattberg Mountain were collected and covered in 20 centimetres of wood chippings and foil. This project, which cost 10,000 Euros, ensured and continues to ensure that the snow survives the summer months in preparation for winter sports events in the area.
"We have, as in previous years, stored away extra snow, wanting to play it safe and have employed a technique that has been used for many years in the Biathlon World Cup," explained Managing Director of events company IXXALP, Andreas Wernig.
The race, which organisers describe as "The Formula 1 of Winter" will take place, thanks to the snow, from 8 to 11 December.
