Ben Raich no longer flag bearer at the Winter Games

New flag bearer at Sochi after Raich delays trip

The Austrian Olympic Committee (AOC) will announce this Thursday the new athlete to carry the Austrian flag in the opening ceremony after skier Benjamin Raich delays his trip to the games.

Raich, who was due to be the Austrian flag bearer, is now travelling to the games five days after the opening ceremony as he has chosen to not take part in the super combined ski on 14 February.

"I will fully focus on the giant slalom and the slalom, so I will travel to Russia one week later than initially planned," he said.

The AOC are now looking for their third choice of flag bearer after the original choice ski jumper Thomas Morgenstern was hospitalised after a crash during training. Morgenstern is currently recovering but due to compete at the games, with his first qualification round for normal hill competition on Saturday 8 February.
