Austria drops ice hockey head coach

After a few shaky weeks in Austrian ice hockey, the Austrian Ice Hockey Association has announced that the national head coach Emanuel Viveiros will not be extending his contract for the next season.

Viveiros has coached the team for three years, during which time he twice led them to promotion to the top division in 2012 and 2014 but also to relegation in 2013.

In the last few weeks critics have called for a decision on the future of his position after the Austrian side lost 4-0 to Slovenia at the play-off game for qualification to the quarter-finals of the Sochi Winter Games.

The Association have said they will not rush into signing a contract with a new coach and expect to announce a decision later in the summer.

"We want to thank Manny Viveiros and his team for the great co-operation, the reached goals and the celebrated success in the last three years," they announced in a statement. "We are now taking a time-out and will analyse the current situation. We will not rush. We have enough time until the new season starts. Latest on 15th August we will present the new head coach of the national team."

There is a high chance that the next coach will be Austrian, reflecting the association's aim for "Austrian coaches with Austrian systems for Austrian players", a position they are planning to implement in the coming months and years.

Viveiros was Canadian-born but had been working in Austrian professional ice hockey since he began playing here aged 25.
